Although the store part of the farm is a HUGE tourist trap and mostly full of knick-knacks you can get for half the price at the swap meet, it opens up to two or three large macadamia nut trees, underneath of which there is a huge wood container of unshelled macadamia nuts. You take as many nuts as you want from the container, put in on one of the many stumps available, and bang it with a rock to crack open the hard exterior and feast on the delicious nut! There’s no limit to the number of nuts you can crack and eat so eat up! Inside the store you can sample their flavored nuts--honey roasted, kona coffee, caramel, dry roasted, and maui onion--as well as a variety of local products from BBQ sauce to macadamia honey to lotions and perfumes.
Cracking and eating free mac nuts is amazingly fun enough, but if you feel like splurging some money, take the tour. It’s $20 for regular and $15 with a Hawaii ID (Student ID counts) and it’s well worth the price. Tours leave on the hour so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to do everything you want. You pay at the little hut next to the macadamia nut trees (cash only) and then enjoy your tour of the farm and Moli’i Fishpond with your entertaining tour guides.
Besides bringing an empty stomach and some cash, bring bug spray just in case during the tour, and don’t be afraid to engage your tour guides and ask any questions you might have about the plants, the farm, or the area.
Directions: Turn right (towards town) on Kamehameha. Drive for 14 miles (about 25 minutes), then turn left into the parking lot of the Macadamia Nut Farm just after Kualoa Ranch.
