On Thursday, March 5th, the current leadership team of BYU–Hawaii Service Association (BYUHSA) held a Q&A where they shared the results of a recent leadership survey and revealed the plans on the upcoming student elections. The Student Voice attended the meeting. Here is the low down:
The student body will have the opportunity to vote on a new BYUHSA president from a pool of qualified candidates selected by a committee consisting of the current BYUHSA leadership.
All interested applicants can pick up an application packet at the Aloha Center desk and fill it out completely. This includes a cover letter; resume; endorsements from the Registrar, Office of Honor, and Financial Aid; a class schedule and MAPPER; and two letters of recommendation from current faculty and staff. The application is due by 4:00 pm Wednesday March 17, 2015 and the BYUHSA Executive Secretary will contact the applicant if they are qualified for an interview. The four candidates that are selected will then have a chance to present themselves to the students in the Aloha Center the week of the 23rd–27th of March. The vote will take place online on March 30th–31st with the winner announced on April 1, 2015.

In order to ace the interview and be considered as a candidate a student needs to display an understanding of how the university functions, have a 3.0 GPA, be committed to take at least 14 credit hours, and have extensive leadership experience.
During the Q&A, Marc Gardner continually stated that what they are doing is different and indeed it is. Unlike in years past, students will only vote for a Service Association President. There will be no running mates. When the winner is announced, he/she will sit down with the existing leadership and hire on two Vice Presidents and an Executive Secretary to staff BYUHSA.
This arrangement is only a small step in the right direction of a hopefully more involved student body. Out of the 2,700 students on BYU–Hawaii campus 627 took the survey that polled students on how elections should be handled:
29% voted to have students decide who runs for BYUHSA President
11% voted to have the BYUHSA President selected for them
54% voted for a combination of the above choices
5% did not care
Is it time for BYU-Hawaii students to get involved? Yes. No matter where you are from or what you stand for, it is important to BYUHSA that you make yourself heard. If you are not satisfied, use the feedback form found at the bottom of this article. In the mean time, get an application from the Aloha Center Desk, run for office, engage other students, and lets continue improving campus life for all students.
