Over the past 3 semesters, students at BYU-Hawaii have been treated to the comedic stylings of improv comedy by the Seaside Jesters Comedy Club. With audience members topping 120 per show, the Jesters are ranking among the most popular events on campus.
The Seaside Jesters Comedy Club was founded in 2013 as an improv troupe that is, as stated through their mission statement, ”devoted to providing an outlet for creativity, imagination, and laughter. [They] seek to help [their] members build confidence, create lasting friendships, and relieve stress. [They] are dedicated to creating an atmosphere of wholesome recreational entertainment.”
Since its founding the Seaside Jesters have performed at over 13 venues during the academic school year, including the BYUHSA “Choose to Give” scholarship fundraiser. Rachel Geary, emcee for the Jesters during their Summer season, explained the mission further, stating that “Jesters is a small oasis in the hectic demands of present life that can benefit so many aspects of the future.” Carina Aldrich, club treasurer, agreed: “Laughter and friends are important, and you'll automatically get both when you work with Jesters. It's good stress relief and just plain fun.”
The Jesters hold weekly public workshops that teach theatrical and life skills. “ Right now, our focus is in improvisational (improv) comedy, which requires quick thinking to create a scene and respond in that scene to the other players,” Miss Geary continued, “Being able to respond quickly and appropriately (which is the basic skill being developed) is a skill which is important professionally, personally, and as a participant in one's own town or school board or country, regardless if the overall tone of the interaction, be it humorous or serious.”
And the laughter is expected to continue. The Seaside Jesters Comedy Club will continue its tradition of free, wholesome entertainment for the Laie and BYU-Hawaii community as it prepares for the upcoming season. Plans for the Fall Semester include weekly workshops and and 5 improv comedy shows throughout the semester. The goal is to help spread family-friendly, wholesome entertainment to the Laie community. More information, including times and locations, will be released on the Jester’s Facebook: www.facebook.com/byuhcomedy.
